Dear Students and Parents,

As you know, today was my last day at Sligo Middle before going on maternity leave for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year. It has been my privilege and my pleasure to be your teacher.  Mr. Michael Wyche, long term substitute, will be taking over my classes for the remainder of the school year and his first day will be Monday, March 11, 2013. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication and I know you will have a fantastic rest of the school year in science.

3.1.13 Study Guide for Genetics Test

Hello and happy Friday!

What a fantastic evening last night! Thank you all who came out to participate in Science Night and Sligo and a special thank you to all the students who shared their science fair projects. Job well done!!!!

For all classes your objective was to use Mendelian Genetics to predict the offspring genotype and phenotype in sexual reproduction as compared to asexual reproduction. We started the lesson off with Char genetoype. Then you moved through stations correcting your study guide using the 2013 genetic review answer key . Then you sat with a partner to get feedback on your BCR responses. Remember your test is Monday!

For periods 1, 5, and 6 your genetics project is due Tuesday.

For period 3 your GMO part 7 BCR from the Modern genetics videos and debate is due Tuesday.

Monday morning is the start of MSA testing. You will begin testing on Wednesday. Here is the schedule for the next 8 days: Daily 2013 MSA v2 original

2.28.13 Genetics Report and GMO Debate

Good afternoon! We are super excited for SCIENCE NIGHT AT SLIGO tonight from 7-9 pm. Come check out what your peers have been doing as well as hear from local scientists, observe and learn about local organisms and the night sky and much more!

All 4 classes should be working on the 2013 genetic review which is due TOMORROW as your test is Monday.

For periods 1, 5, and 6 your objective was to describe how genes are passed from parent to offspring by writing up your genetics report for your alias. Please see the Genetics Disorders Project tab above for all hand outs used in class. This typed assignment is due March 5th. This is the deadline and the due date. You may print it and hand in a hard copy or email it to me. Do not put it in the hand in folder.

For 3rd period your objective was to debate the pros and cons of using the principles of genetic in modern science and industry to improve the quality of agricultural products and life. We started the lesson off with reproduction 4.  Then you got into groups to create a poster displaying 4 pros or 4 cons according to the article that you were assigned: GM FOR GM AGAINST. Then we started the gallery walk to collect information using part 6 of Modern genetics videos and debate. Your next assignment is use all the information you have heard, seen, discussed and read to write a passionate response for or against Genetically Modified Food in part 7 of your Modern genetics videos and debate packet which is due Tuesday.

SCIENCE NIGHT TONIGHT!!!

We are excited to present the 3rd annual Science Night from 7 to 9 pm tonight! Student work as well as student science fair projects will be showcased. In addition, there will be presentations from local scientist from the surrounding community as well as interactive exhibits and, of course, Mr. Osmun and his many reptiles! Please come join us for a fun and education evening: Sligo Science Night Handout

2.25.13 Transgenic Food and Microarray

Hello!

Please make sure you are working on your 2013 genetic review which is due this Friday as your test is next Monday.

For periods 1 and 5 please report to the media center tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday to type up your written report for the genetics project. See the Genetics Project tab above for all handouts, links and templates.
