2.28.13 Genetics Report and GMO Debate

Good afternoon! We are super excited for SCIENCE NIGHT AT SLIGO tonight from 7-9 pm. Come check out what your peers have been doing as well as hear from local scientists, observe and learn about local organisms and the night sky and much more!

All 4 classes should be working on the 2013 genetic review which is due TOMORROW as your test is Monday.

For periods 1, 5, and 6 your objective was to describe how genes are passed from parent to offspring by writing up your genetics report for your alias. Please see the Genetics Disorders Project tab above for all hand outs used in class. This typed assignment is due March 5th. This is the deadline and the due date. You may print it and hand in a hard copy or email it to me. Do not put it in the hand in folder.

For 3rd period your objective was to debate the pros and cons of using the principles of genetic in modern science and industry to improve the quality of agricultural products and life. We started the lesson off with reproduction 4.  Then you got into groups to create a poster displaying 4 pros or 4 cons according to the article that you were assigned: GM FOR GM AGAINST. Then we started the gallery walk to collect information using part 6 of Modern genetics videos and debate. Your next assignment is use all the information you have heard, seen, discussed and read to write a passionate response for or against Genetically Modified Food in part 7 of your Modern genetics videos and debate packet which is due Tuesday.

SCIENCE NIGHT TONIGHT!!!

We are excited to present the 3rd annual Science Night from 7 to 9 pm tonight! Student work as well as student science fair projects will be showcased. For period 6, your objective was to use a microarray technique to determine the genotype for the genetic disorder (Huntington’s, sickle cell, cystic fibrosis or achondroplasia) of their offspring. We started the lesson off with page 5 of the genetics warm ups. Then you joined your partner to determine if your offspring will inherit the disease from your alias in I SR Microarray Lab modified.

For all classes, your objective was to review Mendelian genetics to work on the study guide and missing assignments. We started the lesson with page 4 of  genetics warm ups. Then you worked on missing assignments that were due today or the 2013 genetic review which is due next Friday, March 1st.

Then we watched: and talked about where to draw the line with genetic experimentation. Then you worked with a partner to complete part 1 of the Modern genetics videos and debate which you turned in.

For period 6, your objective was to research the modern genetic techniques used to improve food production and medical advances. We started the lesson off with pp 1.3. Then you used the Science Explorer: Cells and Heredity to complete human genetic disorders and advances in genetics which we will finish tomorrow.
